Blood agar base of gentian violet

Gentian violet blood agar base is a solid medium for selective separation of streptococcus. The basic ingredients are beef extract powder and peptone, and the key additives are defibrinated sheep blood and gentian violet. Sheep blood provides growth factors and shows hemolytic reaction, and gentian violet inhibits gram-positive bacteria. This culture medium can support the growth of streptococcus and show α, β or γ hemolysis characteristics, while inhibiting most non-target bacteria. It is a classic tool for the separation and identification of streptococcus in clinical specimens.
