PEA agar is a solid medium for selective separation of Gram-positive bacteria. Its basic components are peptone and beef extract powder, and the key selective additive is phenylethyl alcohol, which can effectively inhibit the growth of gram-negative bacteria. This culture medium can change the permeability of cell membrane through phenylethyl alcohol, selectively promote the formation of typical colonies of Gram-positive bacteria (such as Streptococcus, Enterococcus and Staphylococcus), and inhibit most Gram-negative bacteria such as Enterobacteriaceae. It is an important tool for the separation of Gram-positive bacteria in clinical specimens.
