Iron agar
Iron agar is a differential medium for detecting the hydrogen sulfide production ability of microorganisms. Its basic components provide nitrogen source for peptone and beef extract powder, and its key additives are sodium thiosulfate and ammonium ferric citrate. Microorganisms that can produce hydrogen sulfide reduce sodium thiosulfate to hydrogen sulfide, which reacts with iron ions to generate insoluble black iron sulfide precipitate. This culture medium can judge the production of hydrogen sulfide by observing the formation of black precipitate, which is an important tool for identifying intestinal bacteria and studying microbial metabolic characteristics.
