Hayflick medium

Hayflick medium is a standard solid medium for mycoplasma isolation and culture. Its basic components are bovine heart extract and peptone, the key additives are horse serum to provide sterols, yeast extract to supplement growth factors, and agar as coagulant. This culture medium supports mycoplasma to form characteristic "poached egg"-like colonies, and can inhibit the growth of miscellaneous bacteria by combining penicillin and thallium acetate. It is a classic tool for the separation and identification of mycoplasma in clinical specimens.
