△elo3 Yeast strain
The Elo3 mutant serves as a crucial tool for investigating the synthesis of very long-chain fatty acids (VLCFA) and sphingolipid metabolism. Elo3 is an endoplasmic reticulum-localized fatty acid elongase responsible for extending 24-carbon fatty acids to 26 carbons. Upon knockout, levels of very long-chain fatty acids (particularly C26:0) become virtually undetectable, while C24 and shorter-chain fatty acids accumulate. This leads to reduced synthesis of sphingolipids (components of ceramide), resulting in the substantial accumulation of precursor long-chain bases (LCBs).
